MY REVIEW:

I’ve read the second and third book in this series before reading this one. And let me just say I loved those two books so I had to go back and read this one too. Check out my review for Protective Heart and Fearless Heart.

Defiant Heart is the start to this series that takes place in a small town called Starlight Cove. It starts with the oldest brother Brady McKenzie, he’s a grump that’s the town’s Sheriff. Luna Lancaster is the resident hippy that’s only been in town for a short period of time.

Luna is traveling through Starlight Cove and sees that a company want to deforest some land in the small town, so she decides to stay and not let that happen. She is determined to fight for her belief’s even if that means chaining herself to a tree to stop the construction that  will eventually ruin the small town.

But she’s causing chaos and the Sheriff needs to keep her quiet for a small amount of time so they strike up a deal that seems beneficial to the both of them. And when they finally get together in the same space they can’t keep their hands off each other.

“Through panting breaths, he kissed the corner of my mouth, my jaw, behind my ear, before pressing his face into the crook of my neck to catch his breath. And there, so soft I wasn’t sure I was supposed to hear, he mumbled, “Twice isn’t going to be nearly enough.”

I absolutely love how Luna was able to make Brady let loose a bit and not be the stoic man he is all the time. He definitely was not that way when he and her were together and alone.

Luna also made him see things in a different way, he was so used to seeing things his way that he never thought about the other perspective. I am glad Luna was able to help him see.

Brady is a good sheriff and works really hard to keep his town safe even if that means sacrificing his time off the clock. He cares so much about his town that he is very by the books and very controlled. But he is loyal to his family and the town he grew up in and loves.

“Showing someone you cared wasn’t always about surprise trips to Paris or spa getaways or a brand-new car with a bow on it. Sometimes it was about filling up their gas tank or making sure their favorite coffee never ran out. Sometimes it was dragging someone out of a thunderstorm, or hanging their only clothes to dry, or bringing them breakfast you’d never eat yourself, or making an appointment so they didn’t have to.”

He also doesn’t know how to let loose and enjoy things this is why I feel like Luna is such a great counterpart for him, they are complete opposites but work well together.

“Even if she weren’t, I’d choose her. I have to choose her. She’s it for me.”

Luna is very much act first think later and Brady is think first and then act, they balance each other out very well.

“Believe me, lawbreaker, you have a lot more power now as my everything.”

This is another hit for me. This author is becoming a favorite and I am even adding her to my auto-buy/preorder list. I love the way she writes her characters and how they seem to fit together when you would think they wouldn’t. and even though I read the next two books already, I can’t wait for the next one to come out, it’s already preordered!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Award-winning USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Brighton Walsh spent a decade as a professional photographer before taking her storytelling in a different direction and reconnecting with her first love—writing. She likes her books how she likes her tea—steamy and satisfying—and adores strong-willed heroines and the protective heroes who fall head over heels for them. Brighton lives in the Midwest with her real life hero of a husband, her two kids—both taller than her—and her dog who thinks she’s a queen. Her boy-filled house is the setting for dirty socks galore, frequent dance parties (okay, so it’s mostly her, by herself, while her children look on in horror), and more laughter than she thought possible.
